Gender dysphoria is listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5). Some people with gender dysphoria are part of the LGBTQ+ community, but experiencing gender dysphoria does not mean that a person is gay, lesbian, or bisexual.

Where gender involves who you are, sexuality is about who you are attracted to. Sexual orientation refers to a person's physical, emotional, or romantic attraction to other people. Gender identity refers to a person's internal sense of gender, whether male, female, or outside of the gender binary. It is also important to note the distinction between gender identity and sexual identity.
